Elfi Floating and Elfi Laughing were taken of my friend and fellow painter, Elfi Chester, on a warm and sunny day last summer. Elfi had just been diagnosed with breast cancer at age 45 and asked me to photograph her before she underwent surgery. The photographs are a collaboration since we both needed to use the time together to make some sense of what was happening to her. Elfi talked about how, in facing death, she was feeling so alive, how it took getting cancer for her to love her body. I'd never seen Elfi so radiant. In between talking, laughing, crying and contemplation, I photographed her. I wanted to capture her beauty, strength and indomitable spirit.
