Organizations that provide free or low cost housing for patients and their families. Be sure to check with your cancer center for any local organizations as well.
Joe's House: A non-profit organization that provides a directory of nationwide lodging accommodations for cancer patients and their families traveling for treatment. Many rates are discounted.
Hope Lodge: Temporary housing located in 26 cities, funded by the American Cancer Society.
National Association of Hospital Hospitality Houses, Inc.: A non-profit corporation serving facilities that provide lodging and other supportive services to patients and their families when confronted with medical emergencies.
Organizations that provide free air transportation for stable patients to distant treatment facilities.
Organizations that provide assistance and guidance for uninsured or underinsured patients and coping with medication expenses.
Patient Advocate Foundation: A national non-profit organization that seeks to safeguard patients through effective mediation assuring access to care, maintenance of employment and preservation of their financial stability relative to their diagnosis of life threatening or debilitating diseases.
Co-Pay Relief (through the Patient Advocate Foundation): Assists insured patients with certain cancer diagnoses.
Patient Assistance Programs: Many pharmaceutical companies have patient assistance programs to help cover or reduce the cost of the medications they manufacture. Talk to your healthcare team or social worker about the availability of these programs for your case or look for the pharmaceutical company on the Internet and find information about their program.
Health Insurance Assistance Service (HIAS/ACS): Aids cancer patients who have lost or are in danger of losing their health care coverage, along with identifying policy solutions to help others in similar situations. The service, a joint effort of the ACS and the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute, connects cancer patients who call the ACS cancer information number with health insurance specialists who work to address their needs. 1-800-ACS-2345.
