Dear OncoLink "Ask the Experts,"
CHAMPUS initially said they do cover bone marrow transplants for some conditions but not for metastatic breast cancer. Does anyone know of a way to "get around" the bureaucracy?
It is our understanding that CHAMPUS will usually cover NCI sponsored or based protocols. OncoLink currently lists several active protocols for breast cancer and bone marrow transplant. Please visit our Clinical Trials menu for more information.
We suggest that you review this information with your oncologist(s). They should assist you in determining your eligibility, and help you to find the nearest facility in which the protocol is active.
Feb 2, 2010 - In leukemia patients, long-term survival rates are similar in those who were transplanted with either peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow, according to a study published online Feb. 1 in The Lancet Oncology.
