Is it true that eating a lot of red meat causes colon cancer?
David Metz, MD, Professor of Gastroenterology at Penn Medicine, responds:
Eating a Western diet which includes a high proportion of red meat is probably associated with a higher incidence of colorectal cancer than not. However, it is difficult to distinguish how much of an influence diet or red meat specifically has on the overall risk. Other risk factors such as heredity appear to play a far more important role.
