Past Melanoma, Could I Develop Others?

Last Modified: June 7, 2011

Question:

Dear OncoLink "Ask The Experts,"

If I have a melanoma lesion removed, could others develop?

Answer:

Christopher Miller, MD, Assistant Professor in Dermatology and Director of the Moh's Surgery Program at Penn Medicine, responds:

About 11% of people who have a melanoma have a second melanoma diagnosed within the next 2 years after their diagnosis. The increased risk to develop a second melanoma persists for more than 20 years. So keep a close watch on your skin.
