Respite Care

Respite care is a service that provides continuous care to the patient in a skilled or an intermediate nursing care facility on a short-term basis. The contracted nursing care facility agrees to accept patients on a respite basis and provide all the services necessary for patient comfort. This level of care is intended to:

  • provide family/caregiver relief in the daily caring of the patient
  • provide an alternative environment for care if the patient?s home is temporarily inadequate to meet the patient?s care needs

Respite care is available to our patients after the patient has been with the hospice program for 30 days. Arranging respite care is managed by the patient's Penn Wissahickon Hospice social worker and is dependent on bed availability at specific extended care facilities. Daily allowances are dictated by the patient's insurance provider. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by one of our Directors of Patient Services.
