Restraining Order
Monotype/chine collé
40 x 30 inches
1993
Catalog No. 6

When my lifelong friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, I wanted to know more about it and began to read about its many different causes and treatments. This led me to do a series of monoprints depicting the monumental female figure. These powerful women represented the mothers, aunts, sisters and friends who either have fought and lost or who have won a fight with cancer.

Restraining Order relates to the effects of both physical and emotional repression and suppression on the cell structure. I see the contrast between the women in my life who have survived and those who have not. I have learned a great deal from these women about life choices and destinies and hope that if I were faced with the same fate, I would have the courage and spirit to endure the trials and conquer the battle.
