Allegra and I have been close friends ever since we were classmates at Wellesley College in the 1950s. The quilt was a complete surprise, arriving by mail while I was in the midst of chemotherapy. It was accompanied by a note saying, "This is to wrap yourself in comfort and healing."
I was overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the beauty and friendship that enveloped me, quite literally, through the patterns and pieces sewn together on my behalf.
Such gifts of art can be powerful expressions of love and support for cancer patients. For me, there is a special kind of medicine in my comfort quilt.
