Cancer? oil, gibrock 32.5 x 20 inches 1994
Locate/React/Confront oil, collaged surface wood panels 49 x 56 inches 1994
Cancer, in particular breast cancer, has played a recurring role in my life. Both of my mother's sisters are survivors. This triptych is my tribute to these women, but particularly to Betty Holtom, my best friend's mother, who lived every moment of her life before and after her cancer.
The paintings were conceived and accomplished during my first test waiting period last summer when fibrous cysts appeared. Betty Holtom became a continued remembered presence while painting; my memories of her and my continued friendship with her daughter add a dimension to my paintings and my academic research.
