Damaged Child bronze 10 x 3 inches 1995In 1987, my father, an American Baptist pastor, was diagnosed with renal cell kidney cancer. In 1988, my father died at the age of 44. I was 15 years old at the time and felt that I had simultaneously lost my faith, my childhood, and my father. I wondered where God was and why He wasn't healing Dad. I questioned the omnipotence of God the Father. In the seven years since my father died, I have continuously struggled to regain my faith and belief in God. I think that my art reflects this conflict. My sculptures deal with the themes of body and spirit, brokenness and wholeness.
Untitled bronze 12 x 6 inches 1995
This sculpture portrays a female figure without breasts. This relates to my mother's 1985 subcutaneous mastectomy.
