This satellite symposium is designed to provide the current evidence for established and potential roles of proton therapy in improving the therapeutic ratio in cancer patients. The faculty are from proton therapy centers at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, The Roberts Proton Therapy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, the James M. Slater, M.D. Proton Treatment and Research Center at Loma Linda University, and the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center at Harvard General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, . While an overview will be given, there will be presentations focused on lung, prostate, pancreatic, and pediatric cancers; and, on radiobiological considerations of proton and carbon ion beams.
Jan 26, 2015 - Research comparing the safety and effectiveness of charged-particle radiation therapy with other treatments for cancer is scant, pointing to a need for comparative studies, preferably randomized trials, according to research published online Sept. 15 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
