Can CAM Treat Cancer?
Last Modified: June 14, 2011
Dear OncoLink "Ask The Experts,"
Are CAM treatments to help with side effects or can they also help treat your cancer?
Tony Meadows PhD MT-BC FAMI LPC is Director of Music Therapy at Immaculata University and Music Therapist at the Joan Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital, responds:
There are two different schools of thought. One approach is to consider CAM a primary treatment, although this is not widely accepted. More commonly, CAM approaches are seen as supporting medical care. This may mean that a music therapist works with a patient during chemo to help them manage their anxiety, or that they work with a shiatsu therapist to manage stress and energy levels during radiation.
