Supplements For Hot Flashes

Last Modified: February 11, 2011

Question:

Dear OncoLink "Ask The Experts,"

Are there any supplement suggestions for hot flashes for ER+ cancers?

Answer:

Jun Mao, MD, MSCE, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at Penn Medicine, responds:

Good question. We ran a clinical trial of black cohosh for hot flashes and found it did not help. These results were similar to a study done by another group at Washington University. We are currently running a clincial trial on acupuncture for the treatment of hot flashes in women with breast cancer. If you live around Philadelphia, this may be something you would be interested in trying (contact Rana Leed: 215-349-5647). There is also some evidence that hypnosis may help hot flashes as well. Stay Cool!
