Belinostat (Beleodaq®)

Belinostat is in a class of anti-cancer therapies called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. Histone deacetylation is a biochemical process that is thought to play a role in promoting tumor growth. It does this by silencing some tumor suppressor genes, as well as other genes that are responsible for cell cycle progression, cell proliferation, programmed cell death (apoptosis), and differentiation (transformation of young cells into specialized cells). Therefore, blocking histone deacetylation may allow the body to block tumor growth and prevent progression.

Brigatinib (Alunbrig™)

A kinase is an enzyme that promotes cell growth. There are many types of kinases, which control different phases of cell growth. By blocking a particular enzyme from working, this medication can slow the growth of cancer cells.

Brigatinib works by targeting and blocking receptors found on the cancer cells called an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK). In some cancers, this receptor is overactive, causing cells to grow and divide too fast. By inhibiting ALK, this medication can slow or stop cell growth of cancer cells tumor growth. Your oncology team will test your tumor for this abnormality, which must be present in order to receive the medication.

Promethazine hydrochloride Oral / IV / Suppository / IM (Phenergan®)

Promethazine hydrochloride is a phenothiazine derivative that works by changing the actions of certain chemicals in your brain. Promethazine is also an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of histamine, a naturally occurring chemical in your body. By affecting these chemicals in the body, promethazine can:

  • Help treat nausea and vomiting associated with surgery or chemotherapy/radiation.
  • Treat or prevent motion sickness.
  • Help treat symptoms of allergic reactions, such as itching or runny nose, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, hives, and skin rashes.
  • Be used as a sedative or sleep aid.

Because of how promethazine works in your body, tell your care team if you have a history of or current respiratory (lung) diseases or problems, such as asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson’s disease or a history of seizures.

Metoclopramide Oral/ IV / IM (Reglan®)

Dopamine and serotonin are chemicals in the body that can cause nausea and vomiting by stimulating the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brain. This medication works by blocking dopamine and serotonin from stimulating this chemoreceptor trigger zone, which helps prevent and treat nausea and vomiting. This medication can also be used to treat gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and diabetic gastroparesis by helping the gastrointestinal (GI) tract’s motility and by making gastric emptying faster.

Dronabinol (Marinol®, Syndros®)

Dronabinol is a cannabinoid, a manmade form of cannabis, the active natural substance found in marijuana. It is approved for increasing the appetite and preventing weight loss in patients with HIV infection. It is also approved as an antiemetic to treat nausea and vomiting caused by cancer treatments. Dronabinol may be used for other things under the care of a healthcare provider. It is thought that dronabinol works by interacting with certain receptors on cells, especially in the brain. Dronabinol affects the area of the brain that controls nausea, vomiting, and appetite. This medication sheet will focus on the use of dronabinol as an antiemetic to control nausea and vomiting caused by cancer treatments.
