Question:

Will I still be able to work while undergoing radiation therapy?

Answer:

Many individuals continue to work during radiation treatments. If you feel well enough to go about your usual daily activities, then you should be able to continue to work. You may also consider a less demanding schedule and discuss available options with your employer. Whether or not you can work depends on:

  • The type of treatment you are receiving and how your body responds to it.
  • What stage your cancer is.
  • Your overall health.
  • What kind of work you do.

If you have questions about whether or not you will be able to work while undergoing radiation therapy treatments, you should talk to your health care provider. They will be able to give you the best advice based on your specific treatment plan.

If you are planning to continue to work while getting your treatments, it may be helpful to think about some ways to manage both work and treatment. The following tips may help:

  • Try to plan your treatment around your needs. If your treatments are likely to make you tired, try to schedule your treatments later in the day.
  • Keep a list of your daily duties and responsibilities handy to better direct others if you are absent from work and need someone to cover for you.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. This shows your supervisors and co-workers that you value your work.
  • Investigate options such as working from home, even if it is not every day.
  • Allow your friends and family to help with everyday chores.
  • Seek support from friends, family members, co-workers, and/or support groups.
  • Learn about concerns about work during treatment.
  • Learn about your rights as an employee under the ADA and what you can ask your employer to do to support you.

Taking time off

Sometimes the side effects of the treatment can leave you feeling exhausted and worn down. It is very common to feel this way. It is best to listen to your body if it is telling you to slow down. If this happens to you, you may choose to stop working for the time being.

If you need to take some time off from work:

  • Investigate if you are eligible for FMLA. While FMLA is unpaid time away from work, it does offer job protections so you can return to your job once you are feeling better. You may also be able to use your PTO/Sick benefits in conjunction with FMLA.
  • You may be eligible for short-term disability through your employer or if you live in a state that offers state disability. Learn more about disability options in our disability article.
  • Talk with your social worker about your options and for assistance with FMLA and disability applications.
